The 5th Maintenance Battalion (Direct Support) initially provided the nucleus of the U.S. Army Support Command Qui Nhon upon arrival in Vietnam. It was at that time an Ordnance Battalion (changing designation in July 1966). The battalion handled direct support and repair parts supply to units in the Qui Nhon - An Khe - Bong Son area. In 1968 [1967] the battalion was relocated to Phu Tai where it became a component of the 593d General Support Group on 1 June 1968 [after November 1968].
